Private-sector owners of residential property may be eligible for financial incentives upon designation of an historic resource. To further preservation goals,
local landmark designation may be accompanied by Raleigh and Wake County property tax benefits in the form of a 50% property tax deferral for the owner. Landmark designation is accompanied by preservation obligations as outlined in North
Carolina General Statutes 160A-400.1 through 400.14 and Raleigh City Code
§10-1054 and
10-2052(a) through (e), which are generally concerned with the preservation of the historic character of the property. Following designation, changes to the exterior of a landmark beyond routine maintenance are reviewed by RHDC through its Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) process.
